Chemould Prescott Road Gallery
Opened in the late 1940s, Chemould Prescott Road Gallery is an institution that has shaped India’s contemporary art scene. It was one of the first galleries to represent Indian artists and continues to nurture some of the country’s most promising talents today including Tyeb Mehta, Bose Krishnamachari, Reena Saini Kallat and Zarina Hashmi.
Chemould also represents international greats such as Jasper Johns, Nam June Paik and Andy Warhol! The gallery offers a variety exhibitions year-round which include solo shows by emerging or established artists with a focus on historical work from across Asia.
Tasveer
Tasveer is the first contemporary art space to be opened in Delhi, India. Tasveer has been showcasing Indian artists since 2005 and continues to showcase a range of work from across media including film, photography and video. The gallery also organizes programs such as artist talks, screenings and performances which are open to visitors outside its permanent exhibition spaces for free!
Gallery Maskara
Headed up by Arunima and her husband Amit, Gallery Maskara is one of Mumbai’s most important venues for contemporary art. The gallery presents a range of exhibitions every year featuring Indian artists with an international profile including Seema Kohli, Manjit Bawa and Rashid Rana as well as some more established names such as Atul Dodiya.
Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke
Galerie Mirchandani + Steinruecke’s first exhibition was held in 2009 when it took over the space of its mother gallery, The Gallery. Galerie M+S has a wide range of artists on show with an emphasis on Indian contemporary art and international work from some of today’s most exciting artists! A visit to this gallery is not complete without catching their latest exhibitions which feature up-and-coming talent alongside established names such as Zameer Niazi and Bruce Davidson.
Pundole Art Gallery
The oldest gallery on this list, Pundole Art Gallery opened in the 1930s. It continues to be a mainstay of Mumbai’s art scene and features artists from established names to up-and-coming talent! This is one of India’s most important galleries for contemporary Indian art. The best exhibitions at Pundole come every year during their annual show which always includes new work by emerging artists alongside more well known figures such as Gauri Gill and Jogen Chowdhury.
